Why Strength Training Will Get You the Body You Want

Cardio alone was never going to get you there. Here's what will.

For about seven years, cardio and HIIT were my whole approach, and I looked exactly the same the entire time. Then a coach put a barbell in my hands, and everything changed within months. Here's why, told through the three myths I used to believe.
The myth: Cardio is the best way to change your body shape.
The reality: Cardio is a great fat loss tool - it burns calories in the session but does nothing for your body shape afterwards. I gave cardio and HIIT seven years to change my body. They never did.
The myth: Heavy lifting will make you bulky.
The reality: Building visible muscle mass takes a specific, deliberate amount of food, training volume and time. It is not an accident. You will not wake up jacked from two sessions a week.
The myth: Losing fat gives you the toned look you want.
The reality: It's a muscle goal, not a fat loss goal. Lean muscle is what creates definition, a lifted look and a metabolism that works harder for you at rest. Cardio can't build that. Only resistance training can. This is the myth that matters most, because it changes what you should be training for in the first place.
Whatever your body goals are, muscle growth isn't complicated, even though it's marketed like it is. It comes down to three things working together.
Stimulus: Your muscles need a reason to change, and that reason is progressive overload, lifting a little heavier or doing a little more over time. Without this, nothing else here matters.
Fuel: Muscle is literally built from protein. If you're not eating enough of it, and enough food overall, your body has nothing to build with, no matter how hard you train.
Recovery: Muscle doesn't grow in the gym. It grows afterwards, while you're resting and sleeping, which is when your body repairs and rebuilds the tissue you just trained.
Get those three things right, consistently, and the changes happen. Skip one, and you can train as hard as you like without much to show for it.
Here's what that looks like day-to-day for your fitness goals:
Five years on from losing 20kg, I've learnt that the body I wanted didn't come from any one thing on its own. Whilst diet and cardio still matter, strength training was the biggest variable. It's the thing that changed my shape and supported my health goals more than anything else I did.
I used to be afraid of what lifting might turn me into. Now I know: it built the body I wanted, not the one I was scared of.
Strength training • Muscle building • Body composition • Women's fitness • Fitness habits • Home gym
