On the morning of 15th March, a battered Scotty Clark was lowered into an ice bath, feeling the cool sting calm his sore muscles. He'd just completed a non-stop 24-hour ultra marathon and, needless to say, he was a bit beaten up.
We recently posted about Scotty's herculean task of running 24 hours straight on his Viper M4 treadmill. Now, we can say with satisfaction that he got through to the other side and had a great time doing it.
As expected, there were some hiccups along the way. At the 80km mark, Clark was dealing with some serious hip flexor pain. Then, four hours from the finish line, he had to take his shoes off due to some nasty foot blisters.
Not one to let small setbacks get in the way, he managed to get through the rest of the run by slowing his pace and taking it easy. As he said during the run: "I'm still moving forward...it is what it is. You push through and you get the job done. Other than that, I'm having a ripper time!"
Despite the bumps in the road, he still managed to clock over 133km, more than 3 times the length of the Melbourne Marathon.
Another milestone reached along the way was his fundraising goal, reaching a total of $5,435 of his original 5k target. Donning his Beyond Blue cap, the idea that he was working to help people dealing with mental health issues was all the motivation he needed when things got tough.
In fact, the mental and physical challenge of the run was a parallel of the psychological struggle that many deal with daily. For him, the obstacles he faced throughout the 24 hours was nothing compared to their pain.
"If I can help them, then I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing," he said.
He had a secondary treadmill setup for friends and family to join him throughout the journey. When it came down to it, it was these friendly drop-ins that kept him going.
He reflected during the run that the hardest parts were the sections where he was pushing through by himself without anyone running with him, requiring him to "stay strong and keep my mind on the job."
But if you think that Scotty's taking a break after all that, then you don't know what kind of runner he is. He's now back in his shed and on the treadmill, ready to take on his next challenge.
Here's a big congratulations to Scotty from the whole Lifespan Fitness team and a thanks for all the great work you're doing. Remember to show Scotty some love by checking out his Instagram page.
