Gym Flooring FAQ
It’s important to look at your fitness routine and how you’re likely to use your flooring, as well as the space you have available. We offer a variety of gym tile packages ranging from 2 to 4 tiles, up to packages of 64. As you can see, there’s an option for pretty much every type of space. The mats themselves are a square metre, meaning a pack of 64 will cover 64 square metres. This upper end is more suited to commercial spaces that are much larger. Smaller, home gym spaces will most likely require sets of 9 and above, with the option to top up your space with smaller sets as needed. In general, it’s better purchase slightly more mats than you need, as most users will need to cut the square mats in order to cover a room from edge to edge, as most spaces won’t be a perfect square.
This will also depend on how you’re using your gym flooring. Heavy powerlifting, especially if it involves dropping weights, will require a thicker mat, such as our 50mm tiles. These thicker gym floors are designed with two layers of rubber, with a higher density layer on top, and lower density underside. This creates optimal shock absorption and protection for both your weights and the floor. We also sell weightlifting platforms inclusive of plywood standing platform and frame for added security. For most other activities, such functional or cardio training, a 10mm or 15mm mat will suffice. Intense aerobic activity, especially if it involves jumping, will most likely require the 15mm mat option. We also sell dedicated equipment mats at 4mm, designed to provide grip and decrease noise for cardio machines such spin bikes or treadmills. For carpeted floors, it’s highly recommended to use equipment mat to prevent indentations.
The first thing to ensure when laying down your gym floor tiles is that the area is clear and free of debris. You also want to make sure that ground beneath it is as level as possible. This shouldn’t be a problem for indoor areas with concrete or wooden floors, but take not if there are any bumps or dips in the surface and try to steer clear of them. You also want to take stock of doors/entries, and take care to not block any entryways when laying down your tiles. You’ll probably want to leave a bit of gap around the entry to avoid any potential issues. When placing your tiles, be careful of any trips hazards they may create, and try to avoid large steps that may not be noticeable. Once you’ve decided on a good location for your floor tiles, make sure to push them together, so that they form a continuous platform. Different mats will serve different purposes, so the best flooring for your home gym will depend greatly on your needs. Thickness will be a major topic of consideration, as more intense exercise, including weightlifting, will require thicker mats. However, there are some preferences to take into account with the type of mat you choose. For instance, we offer a choice between a bevelled edge for a cleaner finish, or an interlocking edge that allows you to connect mats together. The latter is definitely handy for smaller sets as opposed to setups that cover a room from wall to wall. The interlocked design means the mats don’t need to be anchored to stay together, so is useful for standalone sections. Another distinction is between workout mats, and equipment mats. Equipment mats are slightly thinner and designed to be placed under big pieces of equipment (such as treadmills or spin bikes). These differ from exercise mats, which are designed to be worked out on.
Lifespan Fitness offers multiple buy now pay later options, including Zip Pay and Open Pay which give you greater flexibility in purchasing your gym floor tiles. These allow you to spread payments out while still receiving your product straight away. The payments are interest free, and can be spread out on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis, and have no additional fees.
