Resistance Bands FAQ
There are a few different ways you can utilise your resistance bands depending in what you want to get out of them. They’re a great form of low-impact strength work, with exercises like squats, chest presses and lateral raises making a great alternative to barbell workouts. Fitting them around your thighs for a variety of movements can improve glute strength and overall leg power, targeting muscles that may be difficult with traditional free weights. Resistance bands are also a great stretching tool, as they allow easy manipulation of the muscles for an active stretch.
There are nearly endless possibilities for a great resistance band workout. Here is a selection of a few key ones:
Glute Bridge (Glutes, hamstrings, lower back)
Lie on your back with feet flat on the floor in front of your, and knees bent. Place the band around your thighs just above your knees. Lift your hips up towards the ceiling while squeezing your glutes, then lower back down.
Bicep Curls (Biceps, shoulders, grip strength)
Stand on the band with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding the band with both hands and palms facing up. You can also use our resistance band handles to make this exercise easier. Keeping your upper arms stable, curl the band toward your shoulder, then slowly lower it back down.
Squats (Calves, glutes, hamstrings)
Place the band under your feet, then grab the band and lift it to shoulder height. Squat down, pushing your hips back and bending your knees, then return to standing position.
There are many effective ways to incorporate a set of resistance loop bands or straight bands into your workout. Resistance bands are good for strength training, core workouts, stretching and much more. Side lying exercises are a popular option and are great for activating the glutes and thighs. These involve lying down on your side with a resistance band wrapped around your legs. This facilitates a variety of workout options, such as leg raises, either with a bent or straight leg. For an upper body workout, grab a flat resistance band with handles, pin one side under your foot then grab the handle on other side and use for either tricep curls, arm raises or a selection of other arm workouts.
Resistance bands have an impressive ability to build muscle as effectively as conventional weights. The key to this will be progressive overload, something you can do easily with a resistance band set. Progressive overload involves gradually increasing resistance over time to ensure you’re always working your muscles at the optimal level and stimulating growth. For growing muscle, most users will see a difference after around 4-8 weeks of regular use, depending on your goals.
