Treadmill vs Exercise Bike vs Cross Trainer: Which Is Best for Your Home?

Treadmill vs Exercise Bike vs Cross Trainer: Which Is Best for Your Home?

Treadmills. Exercise Bikes. Cross Trainers. These are the big 3 when it comes to home cardio equipment. While most of us have probably tried all of them at some point, when it comes to actually committing to one for your home, it can seem like a daunting decision.

The thing about fitness and exercise is that there's no one-size-fits-all solution. It's all about your needs and your goals.

That's why we're here to take you through the steps of choosing the best machine for your home, so you can get on with your workout.

Pick Based on Your Goal, Body and Space

Here's your quick 60-second guide for choosing the best of option for you.

    If you want to...

    • Focus on running/walking → Treadmill
    • Remove the impact from your workout → Elliptical
    • Maximise calorie burning → Treadmill
    • Want to improve your posture → Exercise Bike
    • Build lower body strength → Treadmill
    • Get a true full body workout → Elliptical
    • Have mobility needs → Exercise Bike

How Each Machine Feels and Why That Matters at Home

    Treadmill

The great thing about a treadmill is that you already know how to use it and what it feels like (you use your legs every day!). Imagine an effortless exercise that's more comfortable than walking or running outdoors due to the added cushioning and support you get from the machine. With a good treadmill, you should feel bouyant and cushioned under foot, with each step feeling soft and easy.

    Exercise Bike

The pedalling motion of an exercise bike removes all the impact from your workout, allowing you to focus on your exercise. It's easier on the joints and knees, so you can intensify your workout without worrying about impact. This is a great option for people with arthritis, or who are recovering from an injury.

    Elliptical

The elliptical cross-trainer can be thought of as a combination of a treadmill and exercise bikes, giving you a gliding stride motion with handles. This machine has the most unique sensation that's hard to describe until to try it out yourself. It feels a little like walking and little like pedalling at the same time. Many users also liken it to skiing.

Treadmill: Best for Walking/Running Goals & Training Specificity

Getting in your daily steps is one of the most important things you can do for your personal fitness. In fact, a recent study has found that reaching 7000 steps on a daily basis can reduce your mortality risk by up to 70%. This makes a treadmill a pretty strong contender for your home fitness space.

On top of this, speed and incline options add variety and different levels of intensity to your workout. Incline in particular activates extra muscles and builds functional strength.

The key trade-offs of a treadmill are mainly:

    • Impact on joints
    • Tend to have a larger footprint
    • Create more noise than other cardio machines

    Choose a Treadmill If…

    • ...you want to reach your step goals
    • ...you enjoy interval training
    • ...you're trying to build up mobility for running
    • ...you want to tackle different inclines for better functional strength

Watch-Outs for Homes (Space, Noice, Impact)

Here are some things to keep in mind if you're thinking of getting a treadmill:

    • Ensure you have a good amount of space. Check dimensions of your treadmill before purchasing, especially when it comes to ceiling height (often overlooked).
    • Look for treadmills that have good shock absorption technology.
    • Be mindful of the noise it might make and whether it will disturb neighbours of family members.
    • If you're tight on space, consider folding or compact models.

Exercise Bike: Best for Low-Impact Consistency & Joint-Friendly Cardio

If you're after a low-impact workout with easy-to-repeat sessions, then an exercise bike is a perfect option. It's great for both steady-state and interval workouts and can be adapted to different fitness goals. Make sure you choose an exercise bike that suits your dimensions and has good cushioning in the seat.

    Choose an Exercise Bike If…

    • ...you have knee/ankle pain or limited mobility.
    • ...you're worried about excessive noise in an apartment.
    • ...you want short daily sessions that add up to great results.
    • ...you like multitasking or watching TV while you work out.

Cross Trainer: Best for Low-Impact, Full-Body Cardio

Cross trainers are also renowned for being easy on the joints and safer for people with limited mobility. Great for recovering from an injury, you can safely work out both the upper and lower body, building well-rounded functional strength and ability. By integrating the motion of the arm, the elliptical naturally works more muscle groups than other cardio machines. Some cross-trainers also allow you to cycle backwards to target different muscles.

    Choose a Cross Trainer If…

    • ...you want a full-body cardio workout that builds both arm and leg strength
    • ...you need something that's easy on the joints while still delivering results
    • ...you're after longer sessions that build endurance

Best Choice by Goal (Pick Your Priority)

    Weight Loss:

    • Best: Treadmill (highest intensity and biggest calorie burn)
    • Second Best: Elliptical (if you're just getting started on a weight-loss journey, it's best to start with something low-impact)

    Base Fitness:

    • Best: Elliptical (works both upper and lower body so has broader benefits)
    • Second Best: Treadmill (great all-rounder that can create the best exercise intensity)

    Running Performance:

    • Best: Treadmill
    • Second Best: Exercise Bike (build leg strength and stamina that are essential for running)

    Rehab-Friendly:

    • Best: Exercise Bike (no-impact and can be taken at your own pace)
    • Second Best: Elliptical (also low impact)

    Time-Poor:

    • Best: Treadmill (simple yet effective hop-on-and-go workout)
    • Second Best: Exercise Bike

    HIIT

    • Best: Treadmill (greater range of intensity)
    • Second Best: Exercise Bike
